I have read several books and articles about successful people for some time in an endeavor to understand what it is that they do that other people do not. But see, it all narrows down to one thing, Time management. We all have twenty-four hours which is used by different people differently and yields different results. While successful people wake up and work on their plans, other people wake up and run through newspaper stories, scroll through social media platforms, watch television programs, and start whining about how bad the government is and how everything around them works wrong.
Freedom of time utilization is the point of divergence in achievements. I am not in any way about to say that we must have equal results. If few students are given assignments, they will not finish at the same time because others will start later, others will start complaining about how hard it is and others will start immediately.
Managing time is both science and art but it is more of art. Read here. There are so many distractions within the cycle of 24 hours which needs proper structure of how you move around it well.
Key lessons taken in these books about time management are:
- Set Smart Goals
- Prioritize well
- Set time limits
- Take breaks between tasks
- Organize your self
- Remove non-essential tasks
- Plan ahead
Setting Smart Goals
When setting goals, you should do what you can achieve. In essence, it should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. A goal should be something you propose to achieve in a certain period that adds value in some way.
Prioritize well.
While working on your tasks, give priorities to the most important ones. Ideally, it should be in four categories:
Important and urgent are the ones to be worked on immediately
Important but not urgent timeline for doing
This urgent but not important you can not be able to do, delegate
Not urgent not important-Leave this and do after everything else.
Do not mix tasks here because the last category can take 80 % of your time to yield 20 % which is unhealthy.
Setting Time Limits
Setting times to accomplish what you do is a key thing for successful people. It helps you remain focused that achieve better results and do more. While allocating, more time should be assigned to the most important task. Choose an environment with little to no distraction as you execute your plans.
Take Breaks Between Tasks
Time breaks are like milestones. It’s important in that it enables you to refresh. As well, it is an opportunity for you to reflect on some of the things that you’ve done. If you take a break, you come back re-energized.
Organize Yourself
Self-organization brings clarity on what you need to do, and how to do it with efficiency. To get organized, it begins from your inner self. Once you convince your heart and mind about what you intend to do, then it becomes simple.
Remove non-essential tasks
This is a crucial action. It enables you to focus on the most important things that need your effort to yield results. Some of the non-essential tasks may take your crucial time that you could use constructively.
In a nutshell, rich people are conscious of the use of time. That is why, they achieve many things. If we also emulate some of these small things like time management, we will change the conversation on how life takes us.
